Basic Attention Token (BAT) is the brainchild of Brendan Eich, the creator of both Javascript and Mozilla/Firefox.
Recognising that the internet economy is built around the attention of its users, Eich designed a system where users can be paid directly for their attention. Basic Attention Token is essentially a blockchain-enabled ad exchange (built on Ethereum) that allows advertisers to pay BAT to publishers to post ads, while users are paid in BAT for giving these ads their attention.
Key to the mission is their crypto-native Brave browser, a Chrome build that blocks ads, trackers and malware and comes with in-built Ethereum wallet support (where user earnings are deposited).
