    What is Ethena?

Ethena is a protocol best known for USDe, a synthetic dollar token. USDe is not backed by bank-held cash reserves like a typical stablecoin. Instead, Ethena holds crypto assets such as staked Ethereum and Bitcoin, then opens offsetting short derivative positions against them. The aim is a combined position whose dollar value stays roughly flat regardless of whether the underlying crypto price rises or falls.

ENA is Ethena's separate governance token. It is not USDe, and owning ENA does not give you a claim on USDe's backing assets. Buying ENA gives you exposure to decisions about how the Ethena protocol is run, not to the dollar-pegged token itself.

    What does ENA actually do?

ENA holders vote on protocol parameters, including which assets can back USDe, new backing strategies and how future protocol revenue may be allocated. Much of the day-to-day risk management is delegated to an elected Risk Committee, which sets limits on backing assets, counterparties and exposure, and controls mechanisms such as the fee switch described below. ENA holders vote on the committee's membership, with each seat put to a fresh governance vote on a recurring basis, according to Ethena's documentation.

You can also stake ENA to receive sENA, which can factor into governance participation. Staking ENA does not make it a yield-bearing bond, and unstaking is subject to a cooldown period before tokens become available again.

ENA does not currently guarantee a share of Ethena's income. In 2026, token holders voted to approve a fee switch that would eventually direct a share of the Ethena Foundation's net revenue toward buying ENA on the open market once USDe's circulating supply passes a set threshold. As of the vote, that threshold had not yet been reached, so the mechanism was approved but not yet paying out. Check current Ethena governance communications for whether it has since activated, and do not assume a fixed or guaranteed payout even once it has.

    Who controls Ethena?

Ethena Labs is the company that built the protocol, led by founder Guy Young. A separate Ethena Foundation administers parts of governance and has, at times, taken direct action in the market, including a 2026 buyout of locked tokens from certain early investors to reduce future sell pressure.

Technical control sits partly with a multisig of signers who can modify parameters in Ethena's deployed smart contracts. The Risk Committee, an elected body of outside firms serving fixed terms, sets backing and counterparty rules and can activate mechanisms like the fee switch. This is a more centralized setup than a protocol with no privileged administrative keys, and it means a relatively small group can make decisions that affect USDe and ENA holders.

    Track record

Ethena has grown quickly, but its history includes real friction points:

    • German regulatory shutdown, 2025. Germany's financial regulator, BaFin, ordered Ethena's German entity to wind up its USDe-related business after the company withdrew its MiCA authorization application in April 2025. BaFin's notice cited serious deficiencies found during the authorization process and ordered Ethena GmbH to redeem its outstanding USDe tokens under BaFin's supervision.
    • Exchange-specific price dislocation, October 2025. During a sharp, broad market sell-off, USDe's price on one large exchange fell well below one dollar for a period, while pricing on other major venues with deeper liquidity stayed close to peg. Reporting attributed the dislocation to that exchange's own pricing and liquidation mechanics rather than a failure in USDe's backing, as CoinDesk covered. USDe's overall supply fell noticeably in the weeks that followed as holders redeemed, a reminder that a loss of confidence can trigger real redemption pressure even without a fault in the backing mechanism.
    • Converge blockchain delay. Ethena and partner Securitize announced a dedicated blockchain called Converge in 2025, originally targeting a mainnet launch within months. Over a year later, mainnet had still not shipped on the original schedule, and at least one project built for it, Terminal Finance, shut down citing the delay. Treat Converge as a declared intention rather than a live product until Ethena confirms otherwise.
    • Investor token buyout and accelerated unlock, 2026. The Ethena Foundation paid certain large early investors to give up their remaining locked token allocations after some had been selling into the market. The Foundation and remaining investors also agreed to end the gradual monthly unlock schedule early, releasing all remaining original investor tokens in a single event in October 2026 instead of continuing to drip-feed them through to 2028. This removed a source of future sell pressure, but it also shows how much influence a small number of early holders and the Foundation itself have over ENA's available supply.

    Risks to understand

    • Funding rate risk. USDe's yield comes mainly from derivatives funding payments. When funding turns negative for a sustained period, that yield can fall to zero or go negative for the protocol, which can affect sentiment toward ENA even though ENA itself is not the yield-bearing token.
    • Custodial and counterparty risk. Backing assets and hedging positions sit with exchanges and custodians rather than in a single self-custodied wallet. Ethena's own risk documentation acknowledges that a custodian or exchange failure could disrupt USDe issuance and redemption, even with mitigations in place.
    • Concentrated control. A development multisig, an appointed Risk Committee and the Ethena Foundation all hold meaningful power over protocol parameters and, in the Foundation's case, over ENA's market supply.
    • Regulatory exposure. Ethena has already faced a regulator-ordered wind-down in one major market. Rules for synthetic dollar tokens and their governance tokens are still developing elsewhere and could change how Ethena operates.
    • Token supply and unlocks. All remaining original investor token allocations were released in a single event in October 2026 rather than continuing to vest gradually, so a large block of previously locked ENA became liquid at once. Team and Foundation allocations continue vesting on their own separate schedules, which can still add to the tokens available for sale over time.
    • Unproven revenue share. The fee switch that could direct protocol revenue toward ENA buybacks is new, activation-dependent and not a fixed entitlement of holding the token.
    • No government protection. ENA is not a bank deposit. It is not FDIC insured and not SIPC protected.

Send ENA on the right network

ENA is issued on Ethereum, with a presence on other supported networks through LayerZero's bridging infrastructure. Sending it on the wrong network, or confusing it with USDe, USDtb or any staked derivative such as sENA, can result in lost funds. Always use the exact network CoinJar specifies for your deposit or withdrawal. Our guide to transferring crypto on the wrong network explains what to check first.
