What is Pumpfun?
Pump.fun is a platform for creating and trading memecoins, mainly on the Solana blockchain. Anyone can launch a coin in a few steps, and it trades straight away on a bonding curve that sets the price automatically. Coins that attract enough buying move on to PumpSwap, Pump.fun's own decentralised exchange. The company has since added a trading terminal and other tools built around the same activity. Our guide to Pump.fun explains how launching and trading coins works.
PUMP is the platform's own token. It is separate from the thousands of memecoins launched on Pump.fun, and buying PUMP is a bet on the platform rather than on any one of those coins.
What PUMP is, and what it isn't
At the contract level, PUMP is a Solana token issued under the Token-2022 standard. Its mint and freeze authorities have been removed, so no new PUMP can be created and nobody can freeze holders' tokens.
You don't need PUMP to use Pump.fun. Trading fees on Pump.fun are paid in Solana or the pool's quote asset, not in PUMP, and the token has no required role on the platform.
Holding PUMP gives you no governance vote, no equity in the companies behind Pump.fun and no right to its revenue. Pump.fun's own token page states that PUMP does not represent a right to revenues or any other distribution.
How the PUMP buyback works
Pump.fun links the token to platform activity through buybacks. It uses a share of its revenue to buy PUMP on the open market and then burns those tokens permanently, which reduces the total supply.
This is a company decision rather than a holder right. In April 2026 Pump.fun made a one-year commitment to run the program automatically, with no stated plan to renew it. The operator can change the buyback rate without a vote by token holders, according to a token transparency filing. Buybacks also depend on revenue, and that revenue comes mostly from memecoin trading, which rises and falls sharply with market sentiment.
Who controls Pump.fun
Pump.fun launched in January 2024. Its founders are Alon Cohen, Noah Tweedale and Dylan Kerler. Baton Corporation Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales, develops and operates the platform. The platform terms name Baton and an affiliated company, Bracket, as the Pump entities behind the platform and its intellectual property. A Pump Foundation also exists, but few details about it have been published.
Control is centralised. Baton holds the keys that can upgrade Pump.fun's core programs and change platform settings, including the buyback. Token holders have no formal say in these decisions.
Track record
Pump.fun has grown quickly, but its history includes several serious problems:
- Exploit, May 2024. A former employee used privileged access to drain funds from the platform's bonding curves. Trading was paused and the contracts were redeployed. The Defiant's report covers what happened.
- Livestream controversy, November 2024. Pump.fun suspended its livestream feature after users broadcast harmful content. It later brought livestreams back under a moderation policy.
- UK restrictions, December 2024. After the Financial Conduct Authority added Pump.fun to its warning list, the platform blocked users in the UK.
- Litigation. Pump.fun's operator and founders face a US class action, Aguilar v. Baton Corporation, which alleges that the platform enabled a scheme that caused losses for memecoin buyers. In August 2026 the court allowed racketeering claims brought by some plaintiffs to proceed against Baton and the three founders. It dismissed other claims, including the securities law claims and all claims against Solana Labs and the Solana Foundation. The remaining allegations have not been proven. The court docket is public.
Risks to understand
- Volatility. PUMP's price can move sharply in both directions, and it tends to follow memecoin trading activity.
- Buyback dependence. Support from buybacks lasts only as long as Pump.fun earns revenue and chooses to keep the program running.
- Token unlocks. Team and early investor allocations are being released gradually over several years, which adds supply to the market.
- Concentrated control. One company can upgrade the platform and change its economics, and holders have no vote.
- Legal and regulatory risk. Lawsuits or regulatory action could restrict how Pump.fun operates or where it is available.
- No protection if something goes wrong. PUMP is a high-risk cryptoasset and your capital is at risk. It is not covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS), and you are unlikely to be able to take a complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service.
Send PUMP on the right network
PUMP is a Solana token. Use the network CoinJar specifies for deposits and withdrawals, and make sure the receiving wallet supports Solana's Token-2022 standard. Many coins launched on Pump.fun use similar names, so check the token's contract address rather than relying on the ticker. Our guide to transferring crypto on the wrong network explains what to check.

Specific risks associated with DeFi tokens Decentralised Finance (or 'DeFi') tokens (e.g. UNI, AAVE) are crypto-assets linked to financial applications and protocols built on decentralised blockchain technology. DeFi tokens carry the following risks:
Smart contract risk: DeFi relies heavily on smart contracts. Even a minor coding error or oversight can lead to a contract being exploited, potentially resulting in significant losses for DeFi tokens.
Regulatory risk: DeFi operates in a decentralised manner, often without intermediaries or financial crime controls. Regulatory bodies across jurisdictions might introduce new regulations impacting the use, value, or legality of certain DeFi protocols or assets.
Rug-pulls / Exit scams: Some DeFi projects might be launched by anonymous or pseudonymous teams, increasing the risk of "rug pulls" where developers abandon the project and withdraw funds, leaving investors with worthless tokens.
Data/oracle risk: DeFi protocols often rely on external data sources or 'oracles. Manipulation or inaccuracies in these data sources can lead to unintended financial outcomes within the protocols. Protocol complexity: The complexity of some DeFi protocols can make it difficult for average users to fully understand the mechanisms and associated risks.
Specific risks associated with meme coins:
'Meme coins' (e.g. DOGE, SHIB, PEPE) are crypto-assets whose value is driven primarily by community interest and online trends.
Meme coins carry the following risks:
Volatility risk: Meme coins can have extreme price volatility, often experiencing rapid and unpredictable price fluctuations within short periods. The value of meme coins can be influenced by social media trends, celebrity endorsements, and other factors unrelated to traditional investment fundamentals. Lack of utility: Meme coins often lack intrinsic value or utility, being primarily driven by community interest, online trends, and speculative trading.
Market manipulation: Meme coins may be susceptible to increased risk of market manipulation including 'pump-and-dump' schemes, where the price is artificially inflated followed by a sudden crash.
Lack of transparency: Meme coins may have limited available information about their development teams, goals, and financials. This lack of transparency can make it challenging to assess the credibility and potential of a meme coin accurately.
Emotional investing: Meme coins often garner strong emotional reactions from investors, leading to impulsive decisions. Emotional trading activity can amplify losses.
Specific risks associated with stablecoins:
There is a risk that any particular stablecoin may not hold their value as against any fiat currency; or may not hold their value as against any other asset. Stablecoins carry the following risks:
Depegging events: Depegging events may occur with stablecoins that fail to maintain adequate controls and risk mitigants. A depegging event is when the value of the stablecoin no longer matches the value of the underlying asset. This could result in a loss of some or all of your investment.
Counterparty risk: Counterparty risk arises when an asset is backed by collateral, involving a third party maintaining the collateral, which introduces risk if the party becomes insolvent or fails to maintain it.
Redemption risk: Redemption risk refers to the possibility that an asset's ability to be redeemed for underlying collateral may not be as anticipated during market fluctuations or operational issues.
Collateral risk: Collateral risk refers to the possibility of the collateral's value declining or becoming volatile, potentially impacting the asset's stability, particularly when it is another crypto-asset.
Exchange rate fluctuations: Stablecoins, often denominated in US Dollars, expose investors to fluctuations in the USD:GBP exchange rate. Algorithmic risk: Algorithm risk refers to the possibility of an asset's stability being compromised due to unexpected failure or behaviour of the underlying algorithm, potentially leading to loss of value.
