Your gateway to the Solana ecosystem, from installation to your first transaction using CoinJar.

Phantom is a non-custodial cryptocurrency wallet built primarily for the Solana blockchain. It now also supports other networks like Bitcoin and Ethereum, but for most people it is still the go-to wallet for Solana.
If you are ready to move beyond buying and holding SOL on an exchange, and want to start trading NFTs, using decentralised finance (DeFi) apps or staking on-chain, you will need a dedicated wallet such as Phantom.
This guide explains what Phantom is, how to set it up safely and how to fund it using your CoinJar account.
Phantom is a hot wallet. It is software, available as a browser extension or mobile app, that stays connected to the internet so you can send and receive crypto quickly.
It is also a self-custody wallet. Unlike your CoinJar account, where CoinJar manages the security of your assets, Phantom puts that responsibility in your hands. The wallet stores your private keys, which act as cryptographic proof that you own the assets in the wallet.
Because you hold the keys, you can move your funds at any time without going through a third party. However, if you lose access to those keys, no one can restore them for you. There is no “forgot password” option for a self-custody wallet.
Phantom is free to download. It works on major browsers such as Chrome, Firefox, Brave and Edge, and is also available for iOS and Android devices.
Always get Phantom from an official source. Scam sites and fake apps often use lookalike domains or paid ads to trick people into installing malicious software.
Once installed, you are ready to create your wallet.
Open Phantom. You will usually see two options:
Select “Create a new wallet” if this is your first time using Phantom.
Choose “I already have a wallet” only if you are restoring an existing wallet using its recovery phrase.
Phantom will now generate a Secret Recovery Phrase, often called a seed phrase. This is a set of 12 random words, in a very specific order, for example:
witch collapse practice ... (Your words will be different.)
These 12 words are the human-readable version of your private key. They are the master key to your funds. If your computer is lost or your phone is damaged, this phrase is the only way to regain access to your wallet on a new device.
Anyone who has these 12 words can take full control of your wallet.
Phantom may ask you to re-enter some of the words to confirm that you have written them down correctly. Take your time and make sure there are no spelling mistakes.
After you have secured your Secret Recovery Phrase, Phantom will ask you to set a password.
This password only protects access to Phantom on the current device. It stops someone from opening your wallet on your computer or phone if they have physical access to it.
Your password does not replace your recovery phrase. You cannot use this password to restore your wallet on a new device. Only the 12-word Secret Recovery Phrase can do that.
Phantom now offers an optional “seedless” setup. Instead of managing a written 12-word phrase, you can create a wallet using your Google or Apple account, combined with your device biometrics such as Face ID or fingerprint.
Behind the scenes, Phantom uses Multi-Party Computation (MPC) technology, which splits your key into multiple “shards” stored in different places. These shards are combined securely when you need to sign a transaction.
For users who want full, traditional self-custody and minimal external dependencies, the original 12-word phrase method in Step 3 is still widely recommended.
Your new Phantom wallet will start with a zero balance. To use the Solana network, you will need SOL to pay for transaction fees, sometimes called gas.
Here is how to send SOL from CoinJar to Phantom:
Copy your Phantom address:
Open Phantom and tap or click “Receive”. Choose “Solana” from the list of assets. You will see a QR code and an address made up of letters and numbers (for example, 8FE...k92). Select “Copy” to copy this address to your clipboard.
Log in to CoinJar:
Open the CoinJar app or sign in via the web.
Initiate a withdrawal:
Go to your Solana (SOL) wallet in CoinJar and select “Send” or “Withdraw”.
Paste and confirm:
Paste the Phantom address you copied into the recipient field. Choose how much SOL you want to send. Take care to send SOL on the Solana network, not on another chain.
Send:
Check the address and amount carefully. Once you confirm, CoinJar will broadcast your transaction to the Solana network.
Solana transactions usually confirm very quickly, often within seconds. Your new balance should appear in Phantom shortly after you send the funds.
Once your Phantom wallet is funded, you can start doing more with your SOL than just holding it.
Solana uses a Proof of Stake model. You can “delegate” your SOL to a validator, which helps secure the network and can earn you staking rewards.
To delegate using Phantom:
When you delegate, you keep ownership of your SOL. You are giving a validator the right to use the staking power of your tokens, not sending them your coins directly.
Be aware that staked SOL often has an unbonding period. On Solana, it usually takes around 2 to 3 days to “unstake” and make your SOL fully liquid again.
Phantom includes a transaction simulation tool. Before you approve a transaction, such as swapping tokens or minting an NFT, Phantom will simulate what is about to happen.
You might see a message like: “You will give 1 SOL and receive 50 USDC.”
If a malicious website tries to trick you, the simulation might show something like: “You will give All SOL” and receive nothing. If that happens, cancel the transaction immediately.
Always read the simulation screen. It is one of the most effective ways to spot suspicious activity before you sign anything.
Phantom is designed with security in mind, but it cannot protect you from every online risk. Because hot wallets are connected to the internet, you need to stay alert.
Scammers often create fake websites that look like well-known NFT marketplaces, DeFi platforms or exchanges. These sites may prompt you to connect your wallet, then try to trick you into approving a harmful transaction.
Always:
If something feels off, close the tab and navigate to the site manually.
A very common scam involves fake “support” accounts on social media or messaging apps. These accounts may pretend to be from Phantom, CoinJar or another trusted brand.
They will often:
No genuine support representative, from Phantom, CoinJar or any reputable service, will ever ask for your Secret Recovery Phrase. If someone asks for it, they are attempting to steal your funds.
Phantom offers a clean, user-friendly way to access the Solana ecosystem. By setting up a wallet, securing your Secret Recovery Phrase and funding it from your CoinJar account, you can start staking SOL, trading on decentralised exchanges and exploring Solana-based NFTs and applications.
With that extra control comes extra responsibility. Always protect your Secret Recovery Phrase, double-check addresses and transaction details, and keep your devices and software up to date.
Taking a few careful steps now can go a long way towards keeping your digital assets safe.
