    What is Morpho?

Morpho is a decentralized lending protocol that connects people supplying crypto with borrowers providing collateral. Its smart contracts run on networks including Ethereum and Base. It is not a blockchain or a bank.

MORPHO is its governance token, issued as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum with representations on other networks. Buying MORPHO gives you exposure to the token, not a deposit in a lending pool. Our guide to decentralized finance explains how lending protocols fit into DeFi.

    How Morpho lending works

Morpho's variable-rate markets pair a loan asset with a collateral asset. Borrowers lock collateral to borrow, while lenders supply the loan asset to receive interest. If collateral falls below a market's required level, a position can be liquidated.

Anyone can create a market using approved interest-rate models and liquidation thresholds. Each market has its own collateral, loan asset and price oracle. Those settings are fixed at creation, so a poorly chosen oracle cannot simply be replaced in that market.

Vaults offer another route: curators choose lending exposures and allocators move funds within the vault's rules. Risk therefore depends on the individual market or vault, not just the Morpho name. The official market documentation explains this structure.

Alongside its variable-rate markets, Morpho documents a fixed-rate lending protocol called Midnight, where loans have a defined maturity date and rates are set when transactions execute.

    What MORPHO holders receive

MORPHO gives holders governance voting power. It is not required to supply assets or borrow, and it is not the network's gas token. Users pay network transaction costs in the relevant chain's native asset.

Holding MORPHO does not itself earn lending interest. It provides governance voting rights, not shares in the organizations developing the protocol or an automatic entitlement to their profits. Governance can activate protocol fees and choose their recipient, but that power is not an automatic payout to token holders. More lending activity does not necessarily translate into a higher token price.

    Who controls Morpho?

The Morpho Association supports development and adoption. Token holders vote through Snapshot, with approved actions executed by a governance multisignature wallet. Voting power follows token holdings and delegation, so large holders and active delegates can have substantial influence.

The variable-rate lending core is immutable: its owner cannot upgrade it, pause it or arbitrarily seize deposits. Governance can approve additional interest-rate models and liquidation thresholds, set protocol fees and manage the treasury. Unlike the lending core, the MORPHO token contract is upgradeable under governance control. See Morpho's governance documentation.

Vaults have separate administrative roles and permissions. Depending on the vault, operators can change allocations or risk limits, and optional access-control contracts can restrict deposits, transfers or withdrawals. An immutable core does not remove these powers or any freezing powers in the underlying assets.

    Risks and incident history

    • Oracle and collateral risk. In October 2024, a misconfigured oracle in a PAXG/USDC market allowed excessive borrowing. This was a market-configuration problem, not a defect in the lending core. The incident discussion shows why market selection matters.
    • Interface risk. An April 2025 front-end update introduced an SDK configuration error that sent token approvals to the wrong contract. A white-hat bot intercepted a transaction and returned the funds. Morpho rolled back the update; its incident report states that no funds were lost and the core contracts were unaffected.
    • Token value and supply. Governance influence is not an entitlement to earnings. Allocations to founders, contributors and strategic partners mean ownership and voting influence are not evenly distributed, while scheduled vesting can add tradable tokens.
    • No deposit or brokerage protection. MORPHO is not FDIC insured and is not SIPC protected.

Buying MORPHO does not open a leveraged loan or put your tokens into a vault. However, lending losses, security incidents or reduced demand for the protocol can still affect the token's market value.

    Transfers and networks

MORPHO exists on more than one network. Use only the token and network shown in CoinJar's deposit or withdrawal screen, and check that the destination supports both. A matching ticker or wallet address is not enough. Read our guide to wrong-network transfers.
