    What is Hyperliquid?

Hyperliquid is a layer 1 blockchain built mainly for trading. Its best known application is an exchange for perpetual futures and spot markets where the order books run on the chain itself, so every order, cancellation, trade and liquidation is recorded on the network rather than on a company's private servers. Traders connect their own wallets and keep custody of their funds.

HYPE is the native token of that blockchain. Stripped of branding, it is the asset used to stake with the validators that secure the network and to pay for transactions on HyperEVM, Hyperliquid's smart contract environment. Like other altcoins, its value rests on whether people keep using the network it belongs to.

    How Hyperliquid works

Hyperliquid runs its own consensus mechanism, called HyperBFT, so it is a base layer in its own right rather than an add-on to Ethereum. Our explainer on layers in crypto covers the difference.

The chain has two parts that share one state. HyperCore runs the trading engine, and HyperEVM runs Ethereum compatible smart contracts that can plug into HyperCore's markets. Most trading on Hyperliquid uses USDC, a stablecoin, as collateral rather than HYPE. Hyperliquid sits within decentralized finance (DeFi), but it is designed to feel closer to a centralized exchange in speed and layout. The project's official documentation sets out the technical detail.

What HYPE does, and what it doesn't

    HYPE has four main uses:

    • Staking. Holders can delegate HYPE to validators, who produce blocks and share staking rewards.
    • Network fees. HYPE pays for transactions on HyperEVM.
    • Trading discounts. Staking HYPE lowers trading fees on Hyperliquid.
    • Market deployment. Builders who want to launch their own perpetual futures markets on Hyperliquid must stake a large amount of HYPE.

You don't need HYPE to trade on Hyperliquid. Traders can deposit USDC and use the exchange without ever holding the token.

Holding HYPE gives you no share of Hyperliquid's revenue, no equity and no legal claim on anything. The link between exchange activity and the token is mechanical instead. The protocol sends most trading fees to an Assistance Fund that automatically buys HYPE on the open market, and the HYPE it holds is treated as burned, according to Hyperliquid's fee documentation. That only works while trading activity holds up, and the network can change the design, so it is not a promise of value.

    Who controls Hyperliquid

Hyperliquid was built by Hyperliquid Labs, a small, self funded team co-founded by Jeff Yan and based in Singapore. The Hyper Foundation supports the ecosystem and delegates a large amount of HYPE to validators.

Control is more concentrated than the "decentralized exchange" label suggests:

    • The validator set is relatively small, and staked HYPE has been heavily weighted toward validators backed by the foundation and the core team.
    • The node software has been closed source. The team has said it will open the code once it considers it secure to do so.
    • Validators can vote to delist markets and step into settlement, as they did in March 2025.

    Track record

Hyperliquid has handled very high trading volumes and has generally kept running, but it has had notable incidents:

    • JELLY, March 2025. A trader used a thinly traded token to push a large losing position onto HLP, Hyperliquid's community vault. Validators voted to delist the market and settle it at a price far below the oracle price, and the Hyper Foundation reimbursed affected users other than flagged addresses. CoinDesk's report covers what happened. Losses were contained, but the episode showed that validators can override market outcomes.
    • API outage, July 2025. A traffic spike disrupted order submission for more than half an hour. The team said it was not a hack and refunded affected users.
    • October 2025 crash. During one of crypto's largest liquidation events, Hyperliquid triggered cross margin auto-deleveraging for the first time in more than two years, closing some profitable positions to cover losses.

Newer features, such as outcome and prediction style markets under a proposal called HIP-4, are being rolled out in stages. Treat roadmap items as intentions until they are fully live.

    Risks to understand

    • Volatility. HYPE's price can move sharply in both directions, and its fortunes are closely tied to a single trading platform.
    • Token unlocks. Tokens allocated to core contributors are being released gradually over several years, which adds supply to the market.
    • Concentrated control. A small validator set and foundation delegated stake give a handful of parties outsized influence over the network.
    • Regulatory scrutiny. Hyperliquid does not require identity checks to trade, and regulators and lawmakers have questioned the platform. New rules or enforcement could change how it operates.
    • Platform risk. Bugs, oracle manipulation or outages on Hyperliquid can hit the token's value even if you never use the exchange.
    • No government protection. HYPE is not a bank deposit. It is not FDIC insured and not SIPC protected.

Send HYPE on the right network

HYPE moves on Hyperliquid's own network, which has two separate balances: HyperCore and HyperEVM. Tokens using the HYPE name on other blockchains may be wrapped versions or unrelated tokens. When you deposit or withdraw HYPE, use the exact network CoinJar specifies and check that the receiving wallet supports it. Sending HYPE on the wrong network can mean losing it for good.
